Did misplacing bitcoin password get away from San Francisco man?

A San Francisco man said he has "made peace" with the $250 million fortune that may have gotten away from him as a result of misplacing his Bitcoin password.

How is bitcoin stored?

Bitcoin is stored on software known as a digital wallet that is secured through encryption. A password is used as a decryption key to open the wallet and access the bitcoin. When a password is lost, the user cannot open the wallet.

What happened to Thomas' bitcoin wallet?

Thomas has almost lost the password (which he originally wrote down on a paper) to a hard drive, called IronKey, where he stored the private key to his Bitcoin wallet, which holds 7,002 BTC worth about $140 million. IronKey allows its owners ten attempts to get the right password and if they fail it will encrypt its contents forever.
